Christmas in July, well May really

A couple friends of mine and I were talking today about the cottonwood fluff flying around and where Christmas in July phrase came from. I know there are people that give gifts to needy kids in July but that is not really what we talked about. We were saying how the Cottonwood fluff flying is like snow and all that. It brought a new meaning and happiness to the fluff flying and July and such. Any one else have a definition of Christmas in July?

I'd always heard that phrase used in reference to marketing campaigns and sales in the summer time. You know, big stores trying to get everyone to go out and shop, buying presents for their friends and families, because even though it's the middle of the summer, there's still reason to show people you love them with merchandise . . . or something like that. I lost myself during that explanation. But at least I left a comment on your blog. That's something to be thankful for. Merry Christmas!

At the ACCC there is a motorcycle group that always comes in July and give the kids presents and they always give them T-shirts with their motorcylcle logo and the words "Christmas in July" on them. I don't know how it got started though. It's a nice gesture though.

I think I'd have to agree - makes a great sales pitch and is a nice excuse to continue the Christmas spirit of giving in the "off season." I had never thought of the cotton/petals though. That's a nice touch. I would prefer that explanation to the money getter.

hi ben. it's probably impossible to pinpoint the actual birth of christmas in july. a movie came out in the 40s with that title. probably before any abc warehouse or crazy carl's cash and carry campaigns and promotions started blabbing about it. and in australia a lot of people legitimately observe a july celebration. makes sense given the switch in seasons down there.

the movie - about a guy who thinks he won a contest and starts to buy everyone gifts - nicely captures the spirit of generosity when no one expects it. it's a catchy phrase for an idea that a lot of people must like.

how are you doing by the way?

Well Michael C, I am doing well. Just finished my junior year of college and headed out for summer school on monday for a month. I just want you to know that I think of you everytime I watch a movie cause I can't help but analyze the movie. Okay so maybe I don't analyze cartoon movies. Though Shrek and Ice Age are fun to find all the spoofs in. Anyways this is a long comment on my own blog. Good to hear from you MC. Take care
